WHAT TO DO

Ask directly

Be present and listen actively

Be present and listen actively

It's important to ask the question, "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking directly communicates that you are open to talking about it in a supportive and non-judgmental way. Research suggests that asking about suicide does not increase suicidal thoughts or behaviors. In fact, it can be a relief for the person to talk openly about what they are going through.

Showing support can involve being physically present, talking on the phone, or other ways of demonstrating that you care. Listen carefully to what the individual is feeling and thinking. Active listening involves showing you are paying attention, communicating a non-judgmental attitude, and clarifying what you hear through restating or summarizing. Acknowledging their feelings and showing empathy are important.

Help them stay safe

Be present and listen actively

Reducing access to potentially lethal means or places is a crucial part of suicide prevention. While it may be challenging, ask if the person has a plan and, if possible, remove or disable access to dangerous items like firearms or medication. If the person is in immediate danger, do not leave them alone and seek emergency help.

Connect them to a support systems

Help the individual connect with professional and community resources. This could include suggesting they reach out to a trusted family member, friend, spiritual advisor, or mental health professional. Encourage them to use resources like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You can offer to help them make initial contact or even accompany them to an appointment.

Follow up

Follow up

After you've connected the person with support, follow up with them to see how they are doing. Studies suggest that supportive, ongoing contact can be an important factor in suicide prevention.

Remember

Follow up

You are not expected to be a mental health professional. Your role is to provide support, encourage seeking professional help, and ensure safety. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number.
